The movement said in a statement that Sinwar was appointed as the new head of its political bureau to replace Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Iran last week in a suspected Israeli strike.
Observers interpreted the choice of Sinwar, the leader of the organization in the Gaza Strip and a founding member of Hamas' military wing, as a victory for hardliners close to Iran and called it a "bold move."
Sinwar is at the top of Israel's liquidation list after he orchestrated the Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel in which militants killed 1,200 people and took about 250 hostages.
A Hamas statement said in part that Sinwar had been appointed as the new head of the political bureau to replace Ismail Haniyeh, who was killed in Iran last week in a suspected Israeli strike.
Last week, Israel confirmed the death of Mohammed Deif, head of Hamas' military wing, in a July airstrike on Gaza. The Islamist movement itself has not confirmed his death.
It is known that unlike Haniyeh, who lived in exile in Qatar for many years, Sinwar remained in Gaza. A Hamas leader in the territory since 2017, he rarely appeared in public but maintained his grip on power with an iron grip. Close to Deif and the armed wing known as the Izzedine al-Qassam Brigades, he has worked to build up the group's military capabilities. Sinwar has been deep underground since the Oct. 7 attacks.
