Uzbekistan and Afghanistan extend contract for railroad repair

It has become known that the Afghan authorities have extended the contract with Uzbekistan for the reconstruction of the Hairatan-Mazar-e-Sharif railroad for six months. According to the Afghan news channel and website TOLOnews, this will allow Tashkent and Kabul to complete repair work on the strategically important railway route.

Recall, Uzbekistan and Afghanistan started the reconstruction of Hairaton-Mazar-e-Sharif in late February 2024. Initially, it was planned that the repair work would be completed by the end of spring this year. According to the Afghan side, the railroad track was destroyed by unknown people.

The cost of reconstruction of the railroad route is estimated at 6.3 million dollars. The extension of the contract will allow the builders not only to restore the damaged sections of the track, but also to carry out a comprehensive modernization of the railroad.

As experts note, the repair and modernization of Hairatan-Mazar-e-Sharif is of great importance not only for the economy of Afghanistan, but also for the entire region. The railroad is an important transportation corridor that ensures trade between Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and other Central Asian countries. Once the reconstruction is completed, the freight traffic on Hairaton-Mazar-e-Sharif is expected to increase significantly.
