US authorities are preparing to invoke additional measures against Georgia, including sanctions, in connection with the ongoing protests in the country, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said.
“The United States stands in solidarity with the people of Georgia and their democratic aspirations. Those who undermine democratic processes or institutions in Georgia, including those who suppress the right of Georgian citizens to freedom of peaceful assembly and expression, will be held accountable. In addition to the previously announced comprehensive review of bilateral cooperation, the United States is now preparing to use the tools at our disposal, including additional sanctions,” Blinken said in a released statement.
Another series of opposition protests began in Georgia on Thursday, November 28, after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced a decision to suspend consideration of the start of negotiations on the country's membership in the European Union until 2028. The protesters are using firecrackers, stones, bottles, and Molotov cocktail bottles found at the scene of pogroms. Security forces are responding with special equipment, including water cannons.
