“The history of parliamentarism in Azerbaijan originates from challenging times when ideas of freedom, democracy, and national unity took shape,” stated Mehmet Süreyya Er, Secretary General of the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic States (TURKPA), at the international parliamentary conference "Parliamentarism: Traditions and Perspectives," hosted by Azerbaijan's Milli Majlis.
He highlighted Azerbaijan's landmark achievements, noting, “In 1918, the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic established itself as the first democratic republic in the Muslim East, with its parliament symbolizing national sovereignty and political maturity.”
Er praised the Milli Majlis's active role in TURKPA, emphasizing its contributions to strengthening parliamentary diplomacy and fostering peace, security, and mutual understanding across the Turkic world and beyond. He expressed confidence in the Azerbaijani parliament’s continued success, driven by its rich experience and commitment to parliamentary democracy.
