Former US President Donald Trump has officially accepted his candidacy for the Republican Party's presidential nomination 5 days after an assassination attempt on him. According to Armenpress, Fox News notes that in underwriting his candidacy, Trump emphasised national unity and also gave details of the assassination attempt.
‘I'm running for president for all of America, not half of America. Because there's no winning for half of America. The discord and division in our society must be addressed. We Americans are bound together by one destiny and our common fate. We rise together or fall together,’ Trump said.
Trump also thanked for the overwhelming support he has received since the assassination attempt on 13 July.
Trump, stated that a lot of people have asked him what happened and he will talk about it. But only once because it is very painful to talk about it.
According to the former White House chief of staff, he turned his head slightly to see the diagram on the screen and was about to turn more, which he fortunately did not do, when he heard a loud whistling sound and felt a hard blow to his right ear. He realised that it could only have been a bullet.
He praised the brave security agents who rushed onto the stage and covered him with their bodies. Trump also noted that he survived thanks to God.
‘Blood was pouring everywhere and yet, in a sense, I felt very safe because God was on my side,’ the former president said. He added: ‘The amazing thing is that before the shooting, if I hadn't turned my head at that very last moment, the assassin's bullet would have hit the target for sure and I wouldn't be here today. We wouldn't be together,’ Trump said.
Trump also asked for a moment of silence to honour firefighter Corey Comperator, who died during the July 13 rally while protecting his family from gunfire. At that point, Corey Comperator's uniform was brought to the stage.
He also announced that $6 million has been raised for the family of Comperator and two others who were seriously injured in the shooting.
Trump also thanked his wife, former first lady Melania Trump, for being by his side that night.
The US presidential election will be held on 5 November.
