WASHINGTON, July 30 - RIA Novosti. The United States is considering the possibility of creating a new overland route from Central Asian countries to world markets through the territories of Armenia and Azerbaijan bypassing Russia and China, Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs James O'Brien said Tuesday.
“The countries of Central Asia are incredibly wealthy, and right now their only options for accessing world markets essentially lie through Russia or China. If we can open up a route that goes through Armenia or Azerbaijan, they will have access to world markets and be much less dependent on Russia and China,” O'Brien told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
Earlier in July, Anjali Kaur, deputy assistant administrator of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), said the United States could become a “credible alternative” to Russia and China for Central Asian countries through expanded funding in 2025.
