TBILISI, 22 July - @NGnewsgeorgia. Another lawsuit demanding the cancellation of the law on foreign agents will be sent to the Constitutional Court of Georgia by a group of opposition MPs.
The politicians started signing the lawsuit today. It demands to establish the conformity of the law with the 28th and 78th articles of the Constitution - on freedom of association and the country's integration into the EU and NATO.
‘The struggle always makes sense. Once this process is over, we will see if the court is still subordinate to the authorities. Our voters will see it, our partners will see it... We will repeal this law anyway,’ said Roman Gotsiridze, a member of the Eurooptimists parliamentary group.
Together with the Eurooptimists, the lawsuit has already been signed by members of the National Movement, Lelo, independent MPs Tamar Kordzaia, Teona Akubardia and Tako Charkviani. The opposition party ‘Girchi’ said that they would not join the appeal. They believe that the proceedings are meaningless as the Constitutional Court is not independent. Girchi leader, MP Iago Khvichia said he was surprised by the ‘optimism’ of his colleagues.
Two lawsuits have already been sent to the Constitutional Court against the law on foreign agents - on behalf of President Salome Zurabishvili and more than 120 Georgian non-governmental organisations.
The CC has already accepted the lawsuit filed by Zurabishvili, who also believes that the law contradicts Article 78 of the Constitution. The ruling Georgian Dream party is sure that ‘the lawsuit will have no prospects’.
