The President of Georgia has issued an ultimatum to the government

Georgian President Salome Zarubishvili at a protest outside the parliament building in Tbilisi gave the authorities a week to call new parliamentary elections, Sputnik Georgia reports.

“Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili at a protest outside the parliament building in Tbilisi gave the authorities a week and personally the founder and honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party Bidzina Ivanishvili until December 29 for them to set a date for new parliamentary elections in the country,” the material reads.

Zurabishvili appeared at another protest in Tbilisi on Sunday and expressed her support to the protesters. Her speech was interrupted as the microphone went off. After that, she said into a megaphone that they were trying to disrupt her speech in every possible way.

Earlier on Sunday, Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze threatened that Zurabishvili will be criminally prosecuted in two cases: if she calls new parliamentary elections and if she does not leave the residence after the inauguration of the new head of state on December 29.

On December 14, the Parliament of Georgia elected a new president of the country, the candidate from the ruling Georgian Dream party Mikhail Kavelashvili, who received 224 votes out of 300. He needed 200 votes to be elected president.

Mass protests have been going on in the republic for more than a month since the parliamentary elections held on October 26. The ruling Georgian Dream party won the elections with 53.93 percent of the vote. Four opposition political forces also passed into the supreme legislative body, but they said they would not recognize the results of the vote and called on supporters to go to rallies.

Zurabishvili, who earlier did not recognize the results of the parliamentary elections, said she would not step down as president. She believes that there can be no legitimate presidential elections with an illegitimate parliament. Zurabishvili also declared herself the only legitimate representative of power in the country.
