Russian Foreign Ministry: obligations to Armenia within the CSTO remain unchanged

Armenian authorities have not participated in CSTO events for a long time.

YEREVN, August 20 - Sputnik. The obligations to Armenia within the CSTO remain unchanged, there are no alternative guarantors of stability for the republic except the CSTO and Russia. This was stated in an interview with RIA Novosti by Mikael Aghasandyan, Director of the First Department of CIS countries of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“As for Armenia's participation in the general work of the CSTO, the line of moving away from such interaction has now prevailed in Yerevan. This position, as we see it, contradicts the interests of the Armenian people and significantly weakens the national security. Ultimately, there are no alternatives to the CSTO and Russia as guarantors of the republic's stability. Mutual obligations within the framework of the Organization remain unchanged,” Aghasandyan said.

He added that the door is open for Armenia to return to full cooperation in the CSTO.

“We expect that Armenian partners, having overcome doubts, will once again demonstrate commitment to interested joint work - in the strategic interests of the friendly Armenian people,” the diplomat said.

Earlier, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said the country will leave the CSTO when the authorities deem it necessary. In February 2024, he mentioned that Yerevan had suspended its participation in the CSTO. In March, Pashinyan specified that Armenia will leave the organization if it fails to answer questions regarding the country's sovereignty.

Armenian authorities have not participated in the organization's events for a long time.

The CSTO includes Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia and Tajikistan.
