Russia accounted for two thirds of the growth in global demand for Georgian wine

In January-November of this year, Russia purchased wine from Georgia for a record 176 million dollars, providing two-thirds of the growth in global demand for local alcohol, according to RIA Novosti analysis of Georgian customs data.

Thus, Russia in January-November this year increased imports of Georgian wine by 12% compared to the same period last year - up to a historical record of 176 million dollars.

At the same time, the demand for Georgian wine in the rest of the world increased by only four percent, amounting to 86.1 million dollars. Thus, Russians provided two-thirds of Georgia's “new” exports.

Russia has traditionally been the main fan of Georgian wine in the world. If 10 years ago, in January-November 2015, Russia accounted for only 46 percent of all Georgian shipments, in the same period of this year, our country has already purchased 67 percent of all Georgian wine.

The second largest buyer with a share of just under 12 percent is the EU, with Poland accounting for half of the total demand (15.2 million dollars). Meanwhile, the association's share has fluctuated around the current level in recent years, and in 2015 it was 12.7 percent.

Ukraine rounds out the top three with imports of $11.7 million, which accounts for 4.5 percent of Georgia's foreign wine revenues. Ukraine has remained near this value for the past three years, and 10 years ago its share was almost twice as high at eight percent.
