Personnel purges in the Armenian government fully fit into the logic of pre-election processes. This opinion was expressed by political scientist Suren Surenyants in a conversation with Sputnik Armenia. In his opinion, it is an attempt to restart the power system before the election cycle.
Earlier, several ministers and heads of executive branch departments, as well as the head of the Supreme Judicial Council resigned. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan confirmed that it was he who initiated their resignations, and also emphasized that the series of dismissals is not related to personal factors, but is caused by systemic problems.
As the expert noted, the wave of resignations in the Armenian government was expected, especially after the recent session of the Cabinet, during which Prime Minister Pashinyan gave a “tear-down” to the law enforcers.
According to Surenyants, most of the dismissed officials made toothless statements about “harmonious work” and “quiet and peaceful departure,” as they were not characterized by a bright personality and it was hard to expect any other reaction from them.
And he considers the statement of the resigned head of the CSS Karen Andreasyan to be the most scandalous.
“We are dealing with an outrageous fact in the case of Karen Andreasyan, who actually expressed gratitude to Nikol Pashinyan for his trust, while the Prime Minister, according to the legislation, should not have had anything to do with the appointment of the head of the Supreme Court. In other words, the numerous claims of opposition figures that the judicial power in Armenia is under the heel of the executive power have been confirmed,” the political scientist believes.
Surenyants also considers strange Nikol Pashinyan's words that he asked the officials to resign, because their dismissal, as well as appointment, is the function of the head of the Cabinet.
At the same time, Surenyants did not rule out that some of the officials who lost their posts will finally leave the orbit of power, in the case of some of the ex-heads there may be a reshuffle of posts, and criminal cases may even be initiated against some of them.
“It is possible that criminal cases will be opened against some. By doing so, Pashinyan will fully demonstrate in action his false theses. In general, the “golden rule” is that any revolution, having eaten the strangers, proceeds to eat its own. This is authoritarianism personified. I have repeatedly said that Pashinyan will not spare even his associates in case of necessity - both to retain power and to flee the country. And no one should have any illusions here,” the political scientist said.
As for new appointments, according to the expert, they can be expected both in the near future and in a couple of months, if Prime Minister Pashinyan wants to simulate the party's participation in selecting new candidates for high positions.
In conclusion, he emphasized that there are always reshuffles in any political teams on the eve of elections. So, it's all about intra-party relations. The system of power adapts to participation in elections, and it does not matter whether they will be extraordinary or regular.
Let us remind that on November 18 it became known that the heads of the Anti-Corruption Committee and Supreme Judicial Council Sasun Khachatryan and Karen Andreasyan, Minister of Infrastructure and Territorial Administration Gnel Sanosyan, Chairmen of the State Revenue Committee and Investigation Committee Rustam Badasyan and Argishti Kyaramyan, as well as the head of the Interior Ministry Vahe Ghazaryan lost their posts. The string of resignations began shortly after the recent government meeting, during which Nikol Pashinyan sharply criticized the work of the law enforcement agencies.
