India is sending the first battery of its Akash air defense missile systems to Armenia, the New Indian Express reported citing the manufacturer of the systems, Bharat Electronics Limited.
“Bharat Electronics Limited today marked a significant step in India's defense exports as Defense Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar signaled the delivery of the first battery of Akash weapon system for export to a friendly foreign countryվ,” the company reported.
As the publication recalls, Armenia signed an agreement with India in 2022 to purchase 15 Akash missile systems worth about 60 billion rupees ($710 million) and became the first foreign country to buy the missile system.
The Akash system, developed by the Defense Research and Development Organization, is a surface-to-air missile that can engage fighter jets, cruise missiles and air-to-ground missiles, drones and other aerial vehicles at a range of up to 25 kilometers.
Each battery of the Akash weapon system, manufactured by Bharat Electronics Limited, is accompanied by one passive 3D electronically scanned radar and four launchers with three missiles each, all of which are interlinked.
