At an open dialogue with entrepreneurs in Nukus, Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev spoke about creating conditions for equal competition and the country's goals of joining the World Trade Organization in 2026.
“Previously, our economy needed patronage to some extent. If we continue on this path, our opportunities will be limited,” Mirziyoyev said.
It was noted that Uzbekistan's exports for seven months have grown by 13% and exceeded $10 billion, and 1,610 companies, previously not engaged in exports, have entered foreign markets.
The head of state said that “big steps” have been made to join the World Trade Organization in 2026.
“Joining this organization is a thoughtful and visionary choice, and an integral part of our reforms. However, some look at it with doubt, while others worry that businesses will not be able to withstand it and imports will overwhelm the market.
One thing we need to realize is that import duties will work. That is why we are negotiating with members of the organization.
Our future is an equal competitive environment and an export-oriented industrial and trade policy,” the head of state said.
Back in April 2023, Shavkat Mirziyoyev said that joining the WTO would provide even greater opportunities to increase exports of finished products.
“That is why Uzbekistan has restarted the process of joining this international structure in 2019 and has made confident steps in this direction over the past period,” the Uzbek presidential press service said in a statement.
