MEPs demand release of Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan

52 MEPs have signed a statement calling on Azerbaijan to immediately release Armenian prisoners of war, guarantee the protection of Artsakh's cultural heritage and withdraw the Azerbaijani Armed Forces from Armenia's occupied territories.

The statement reads, in particular:

“In the run-up to the COP29 conference to be held in November 2024 in Azerbaijan, we want to emphasize that it is not only an influential and significant climate conference, but also committed to the principles of justice and human dignity. Therefore, for the host country, in this case Azerbaijan, adherence to these principles should be of paramount importance.

We call on the Government of Azerbaijan to:

-immediately and unconditionally release all Armenian prisoners of war, hostages and captives held in Baku, including the military and political leadership of Nagorno-Karabakh.

Ensure that the Armenian cultural and religious heritage in Nagorno-Karabakh, including monasteries and cross-stones, remain inviolable, protected from “Albanization” and the rewriting of history.

-We call on the Council to refrain from threats and any aggression against the Republic of Armenia, and to withdraw the Azerbaijani Armed Forces from the occupied territories of the Republic of Armenia.

Moreover, we call on the Council, the EU Commission, the EU High Representative for External Relations and Security Policy to take into account the above-mentioned resolutions adopted by the European Parliament and to act in accordance with their spirit”.
