The UN Security Council called on Russia to fulfill its obligations under the ceasefire agreement of August 12, 2008 and immediately withdraw its troops from the territory of Georgia. This is reported by the Georgian Foreign Ministry.
The situation in occupied Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region was discussed at a closed session of the UN Security Council on August 14, in connection with the 16th anniversary of the Russian-Georgian war. The meeting was followed by a statement on behalf of eight states - France, the US, the UK (three of their five permanent members of the UN Security Council), Japan, Slovenia, Malta, and Greece and Denmark (future members).
"We condemn the continued gross violation of Georgia's territorial integrity by the Russian Federation and its illegal military presence in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region," Malta's Deputy Permanent Representative Francesca Gati voiced the joint statement.
She pointed out that the Russian invasion of Georgia in August 2008 was the first manifestation of Russia's aggressive policy towards neighboring countries and European security. The statement noted that today Russia continues on this path of unprovoked aggression against Ukraine.
The members of the UN Security Council reaffirmed their firm support for Georgia's independence and sovereignty.
They emphasized that Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region remain an integral part of Georgia despite Russia's moves to annex them, including through the signing of integration agreements, the transfer of strategic facilities such as the Bichvinta resort, Sukhumi airport and the port of Ochamchira, and the holding of illegal elections in 2024.
The statement condemns Russia's constant provocations in Georgia, such as exercises in its waters and airspace, and the establishment of a naval base in Ochamchira. Special attention is paid to the facts of bordering, as well as illegal detentions of local residents and abductions near the administrative borders with Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region.
Gati listed the names of six Georgian citizens who have been killed by security forces in the occupied territories in recent years. She pointed out that so far those responsible for the deaths of some of them have not been brought to justice.
