Medvedev commented on the ban on LGBT* propaganda in Georgia

Georgia is not obliged to follow the model imposed on it, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said, commenting on the ban on LGBT* propaganda (the movement is recognized as extremist and banned in Russia) in Georgia.

The Georgian parliament on September 17 passed in the third reading a law banning LGBT* propaganda.

"It is the choice of the country itself, it is the choice of the parliamentarians. If they consider some of the values they are trying to impose on them as alien to the Georgian people, who are Orthodox people, they are Christians, then they have the right to do so. They are not obliged to follow the model that is being imposed on them from any other place," Medvedev said in an interview with RT.

The law passed in Georgia implies a ban on LGBT* propaganda, same-sex marriage and sex reassignment, as well as a ban on meetings and campaigns aimed at promoting same-sex intimate relationships, incest, adoption or guardianship by a same-sex couple or a person of non-heterosexual orientation. Medical interventions related to sex reassignment would also be prohibited, and television broadcasts would be prohibited from showing intimate same-sex scenes. Public gatherings or demonstrations aimed at popularizing the LGBT* theme will be banned, and restrictions will be imposed on viewing films with homosexual scenes in cinemas for those under 18.
