The complex military and political processes in the SCO and CIS require countries to consolidate efforts to counter terrorism and extremism, Uzbek SSB chief Abdusalom Azizov said. He also emphasized the importance of assisting Afghanistan in fighting terrorism: “The enemy must be defeated together,” he said.
Complex and contradictory military and political processes taking place in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the CIS require the member countries to consolidate efforts and coordinated measures to counter international terrorism, religious extremism and radicalism. Lieutenant General Abdusalom Azizov, chairman of the State Security Service of Uzbekistan, said this at a joint conference of the Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and the CIS Anti-Terrorist Center in Tashkent on Wednesday.
Abdusalom Azizov listed factors that threaten the security of SCO and CIS member states. The situation is aggravated by the fact that international terrorist organizations have not abandoned their destructive plans against the SCO and CIS states, he said.
“The Afghan government, based on its capabilities and resources, is countering international terrorism. The Afghan special service is on the “front line” of the fight against ISIS (“Islamic State - Velayat Khorasan” - ed.) and is achieving certain results. In this regard, Afghan partners cannot be left alone with this problem, the enemy must be defeated together, based on the principle of indivisibility of security,” the SGB chief emphasized.
He pointed out the importance of assisting Afghanistan in the fight against Velayat Khorasan, as weakening countermeasures will lead to strengthening of the group, and this, in turn, threatens the security of the entire region.
Abdusalom Azizov expressed conviction that “only joint efforts with consistent and coordinated work based on mutual trust, regular exchange of information and experience in combating international terrorism and extremism, as well as countering cyber threats can achieve effective results in ensuring stability and security in our countries.
President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev said in his address to the conference participants that the fundamental basis for countering terrorism and extremism is the protection and promotion of human rights and freedoms, as well as strict observance of the rule of law.
