U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris has won the necessary number of votes of the Democratic Party delegates participating in the online election to officially become a candidate for the highest public office in the country. Democratic National Committee Chairman Jamie Harrison said in a written statement.
"I am proud to confirm that Vice President Harris won over a majority of the votes of all convention delegates and will become the Democratic Party's nominee when voting closes on Monday," he said.
The virtual Democratic vote brings the culmination of a tumultuous nomination process that was interrupted by President Joe Biden's decision to drop out of the race, Euronews reported.
Formal nominations are expected to be completed by Aug. 7, although the party's convention in Chicago is still more than two weeks away. At it, Democrats plan to hold a state-by-state roll call vote, which is the traditional way of choosing a candidate. Against the backdrop of online voting, however, it will be a purely ceremonial procedure.
