UN Secretary-General António Guterres believes that the world is once again facing the threat of real use of nuclear weapons. He said this in a message on the occasion of the 79th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Hiroshima, which was read at a memorial ceremony by UN Deputy Secretary General and High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu.
"Nuclear weapons and threats of their use - they are not just in the pages of history books. This kind of everyday rhetoric is reasserting itself against the backdrop of the situation in international relations," Guterres said, emphasizing that this is a real threat that the world is now facing. The UN secretary-general expressed confidence that the only way to finally eradicate the threat from nuclear weapons is to abandon them altogether. "There can be no winners in a nuclear war and such a war must never be started," he summarized.
Meanwhile, Guterres, as in all past years, did not mention the U.S. in his message as the country that carried out the atomic bombings of Japanese cities in 1945.
The atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were carried out by the U.S. at the very end of World War II with the officially declared purpose of hastening Japan's surrender. These are the only examples in human history of the military use of nuclear weapons. The United States still does not recognize its moral responsibility, justifying such actions by "military necessity."
