Georgian special forces, who dispersed participants of an opposition rally in the center of Tbilisi, have surrounded the remaining opposition supporters in the city center, a RIA Novosti correspondent reports.
The rally in the center of Tbilisi had been going on since Sunday evening. First its participants were pushed away from the parliament, then, on Monday morning, they were forced out of the part of the city center they had occupied all night.
Law enforcers set up barricades on several sides near the Rustaveli metro station, near where the remaining protesters had settled.
The protesters on Monday night were pushed away from the parliament further down Rustaveli Avenue, part of which they occupied until the morning. Using tear gas, riot police were able to push them out of there on Monday morning.
On the evening of December 1, the Georgian NGO “Association of Young Lawyers” reported that more than 200 people had been detained in Tbilisi over the past few days.
Another series of opposition protests began in Georgia on Thursday after Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze announced a decision to suspend consideration of the start of negotiations on the country's membership in the European Union until 2028.
Protesters are using firecrackers, stones, bottles, and Molotov cocktail bottles were reportedly found at the scene of the pogroms. Law enforcers have responded by using special equipment, including water cannons and occasionally tear gas.
