Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze has voted in the parliamentary elections at a polling station in western Tbilisi, a RIA Novosti correspondent reports from the polling station.
“This is an election equal to a referendum..., a referendum between war and peace, immoral propaganda and traditional values, between a dark past and a bright future...,” Kobakhidze told reporters.
According to him, the ruling party has a very optimistic forecast, they expect 60% of the population's support.
“I call on all political parties to recognize the CEC election..., this is our difference from the opposition, we are always committed to the data of the Central Election Commission..., but let the opposition accept that we will have 60%,” Kobakhidze said.
Voting began at 8 a.m. local time (7 a.m. Moscow time).
The main rivals in the election are the ruling Georgian Dream party, which favors maintaining moderate relations with Russia and opposes the imposition of sanctions. It is opposed by the entire conglomerate of the Georgian opposition, which exists at the expense of Western grants and therefore favors rapprochement with the West.
A new round of confrontation between the Georgian Dream, which has a majority of seats in parliament, and the Georgian opposition began after the adoption of the law on foreign agents, according to which all non-governmental organizations in Georgia that receive a significant part of their funding from abroad must be registered from August 1. The adoption of the law on foreign agents caused extreme discontent of the West, the process of Georgia's European integration was suspended, and the West imposed sanctions against Georgian politicians. A wave of protests swept across the country. The opposition calls the law pro-Russian, although similar laws on foreign agents have been introduced in various countries, including Western ones.
