Foreign Ministry spokesman: Azerbaijani authorities show inaction in the issue of clarifying the fate of Armenian military men

The Azerbaijani authorities are inactive in the issue of clarifying the fate of the missing Armenian soldiers. This was stated by Hayk Sargsyan, Head of the Humanitarian Affairs Department of the RA Foreign Ministry in Vanadzor at the opening of the photo exhibition dedicated to the International Day of the Disappeared.

"Unfortunately, the Armenian society has also been touched by this problem. As a result of Azerbaijan's aggression against Nagorno-Karabakh in 2020 and 2023, new cases of missing persons and enforced disappearances have been added to the hundreds of cases of missing persons and enforced disappearances of the 1990s. Moreover, even in the presence of documented and video evidence, the Azerbaijani authorities show inaction in the issue of clarifying the fates of the Armenian military.

In this context, Armenia is taking all possible steps to present the problem in international structures and courts, including taking into account the fact that enforced disappearances in certain circumstances can be considered a crime against humanity under international law," Hayk Sargsyan emphasized.

According to him, Armenia has signed and ratified the international convention "On the Protection of All Persons Subjected to Enforced Disappearance" within the framework of the fight against enforced disappearances, including the prevention of such crimes and impunity.

"At the same time, we cannot only remember and mourn today. We have an obligation to be a voice demanding and calling for accountability, demanding truth and justice. Together with our international partners, we continue to take steps to clarify the fates of the missing. The Armenian side has never politicized the humanitarian cooperation and has always been open to work with all parties involved, attaching importance to such cooperation as a means of achieving trust and peace. I would like to assure that the work will not stop until the fate of all the missing is clarified and all the families receive an answer to their most pressing question," concluded Sarkisian.
