The Armenian cultural heritage of Nagorno-Karabakh awaits the fate of the Armenian heritage of Nakhichevan. This was stated by cartographer and geographer Ruben Galchyan, who specializes in historical maps of Armenia and the South Caucasus region, during an international conference on “Problems of Historical and Cultural Heritage in the Post-Soviet Period” at the Armenian Academy of Sciences on August 29. He recalled that Azerbaijan is trying to appropriate Armenian cultural heritage, claiming that it allegedly belongs to Albanian culture.
“Moreover, Azerbaijan is trying to promote the false thesis that Armenians came to the region in the 19th century,” Galchyan noted.
The cartographer added that by capturing new territories, the Azerbaijani-Turkish tandem is in parallel leading the destruction of Armenian heritage. “This happened both during the Armenian Genocide by Ottoman Turkey and in the following years in Nakhichevan by Azerbaijan. The same thing awaits Nagorno-Karabakh. This is a consistent policy pursued by the same regime. Therefore, it is impossible to hope that this trend will change if nothing is done to counter it,” the geographer emphasized.
Galchian presented the state of Armenian cultural heritage in Muslim Iran for comparison. He reminded that not only is the Armenian heritage carefully preserved in the Islamic Republic, but a part of it has been submitted for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
