The suspension of Armenia's membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is a huge mistake, Yerevan has always received a lot of help from Moscow and members of the organization. This opinion was expressed in an interview with TASS by Nikolai Bordyuzha, who served as CSTO Secretary General from 2003 to 2016.
"I believe that it is Armenia's sovereign right to participate in the Collective Security Treaty Organization or to withdraw from it. They determine what kind of security system will be in Armenia, it is the top political leadership (that decides). If they think that it is more convenient for them to conduct their security policy in this way, then it is their right. I believe that this is a colossal mistake based, first of all, on absolutely unreliable data," Bordyuzha said.
"And when the top political leadership (of Armenia) says that they did not receive any assistance from Russia, that it was almost Russia that prepared all these coups, there was no assistance from the CSTO, it is absolutely untrue," he added.
The ex-secretary-general noted that the opposite was happening before his eyes. "When both the armed forces of Armenia and the power structures of the whole Armenia received colossal assistance - organizational, scientific and technical assistance with weapons from the Russian Federation. You know, it's just the data is closed, if you calculate how much Russia invested in the armed forces of Armenia and in Armenia in general, I think it will be a very, very serious amount," Bordyuzha said.
