The incumbent US President Joe Biden has confirmed that he will remain in office until the end of his term, i.e. for another six months.
In an address to the nation from the Oval Office of the White House on July 24, Biden outlined his priorities for the current period, including reforming the Supreme Court, strengthening NATO, containing Putin and combating global climate change.
“Over the next six months, I will be focused on doing my job as president,” he said.
The president also plans to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on July 26 to discuss a possible cease-fire in the Gaza Strip.
Biden said the best way to move forward is to pass the baton to a new generation. In his speech, he called Vice President Kamala Harris an experienced, tough and competent politician.
“I believe that my accomplishments as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America's future, all deserve a second term. But nothing can stand in the way of saving our democracy. That includes personal ambitions,” he said, explaining why he decided to withdraw from the presidential race.
