Azerbaijani ambassador summoned to French Foreign Ministry over words about neo-colonialism

Azerbaijan's ambassador to France has been summoned to the French Foreign Ministry in connection with statements by Azerbaijani authorities on the problem of “neocolonialism” in the overseas territories of France and the Netherlands at the UN COP29 climate conference in Baku, the ministry said in a communiqué published on its website on Tuesday.

Earlier, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said that the overseas territories of France and the Netherlands “face very serious problems” such as “neocolonialism and climate change.” Following this, French Minister of Environmental Transformation and Energy Agnès Pannier-Runachet refused to attend COP29 in Baku.

“On Tuesday, November 19, Azerbaijan's ambassador to France was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,” the French Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

It is noted that the diplomat's summons followed “unacceptable statements” by Azerbaijani authorities at the COP29 conference, as a result of which Pannier-Runachet “was forced to cancel her participation” in the event.

In September, Azerbaijan's Foreign Ministry responded to Macron's statement at the UN General Assembly on solidarity with Armenia by demanding that Paris “put an end to destructive activities” in the Transcaucasus.

Baku and Paris accuse each other, respectively, of military support for Armenia and assistance to separatist movements. Thus, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has previously stated that France supports Armenian separatism in Karabakh, while former French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin accused Azerbaijan of interfering in the unrest in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia.
