Armenian and U.S. defense ministers meet at Pentagon

On December 5, RA Defense Minister Suren Papikyan met with U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. This is reported by the RA Defense Ministry.


The official ceremony of the meeting was held at the Pentagon and the national anthems of the Republic of Armenia and the United States were played.


Minister of Defense Suren Papikyan, thanking U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin for the warm reception, presented the details of the reforms being implemented in the RA Armed Forces, noted the priority directions of cooperation aimed at the transformation of the RA Armed Forces and increasing the level of cooperation with the U.S. Armed Forces: military education, combat training, training in preparation for participation in international peacekeeping missions, development of professional non-commissioned officer and instructor institutes, creation of training institutes for the U.S. Armed Forces.


Welcoming the Armenian Defense Minister Suren Papikian, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin noted that the visit of the Armenian Defense Minister is historic.


During the meeting, issues related to Armenia-US cooperation in the defense sphere were discussed.


Lloyd Austin noted that the United States supports the independence, sovereignty and well-being of the Republic of Armenia, emphasizing that the cooperation between the two countries continues to expand.


Minister Austin expressed the readiness of the USA to continue supporting the reforms of the RA Armed Forces.


Issues related to international and regional security were also discussed.


Defense Minister Suren Papikian reaffirmed Armenia's aspiration to achieve long-term peace in the region. In turn, U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin expressed U.S. support for this aspiration.
