Armenia's immunity to cyber threats is extremely low: what experts advise

Armenia's immunity to cyber threats is extremely low, media expert Samvel Martirosyan told Sputnik Armenia. According to him, there is no country in the world that is well protected in terms of cyber security - threats are constantly growing both quantitatively and qualitatively, and our country is no exception.

“There were no fraudulent schemes in Armenia for a long time, as few people used, for example, online banking or payment applications. Over the last 2-3 years, the situation has changed dramatically and the problems have increased significantly. And 2024 was a bad year for us in this respect, and a couple of measures will not solve the problem - it is systemic: we need to change legislation, develop state institutions, society and the press should also be involved in the process. The country's immunity to cyber threats is underdeveloped in all directions,” Martirosyan noted.

He emphasized that some positive changes can be expected now, as there has been a draft law on cyber security since last year, which is periodically being finalized.

Martirosyan emphasizes: in order to become a cybersecure society, it is necessary to improve education, address public awareness issues, establish cooperation between state structures and the private sector, and train more specialists, as there is a great shortage of them.

Talking to Sputnik Armenia, Grigor Saghyan, vice president of the Internet Society organization, said that there are certainly good specialists in Armenia, but there are also too many organizational problems.

“A law on cybersecurity is being developed now, changes are constantly being made, it has long been promised that it would be ready. There are several articles in the Criminal Code that deal with cybersecurity, but in our country there is not even a definition of what cybersecurity is. There is a formula adopted in the West, it calls cybersecurity ensuring uninterrupted and stable operation of cyberspace (Internet with devices connected to it), as well as control over content,” Sagyan noted.

He added that all media experts are waiting for the full adoption of the relevant law, which has been discussed on various platforms.

It should be noted that according to the Global Cybersecurity Index (GCI), Armenia ranked 90th among 193 countries at the beginning of 2024. At that time Turkey ranked 11th, Azerbaijan 40th, Iran 54th and Georgia 55th.

Recall that on February 15, 2024, a public discussion of the draft law “On Cyber Security” was held in Armenia.
