An expert told what threatens the coming of the opposition to power in Georgia

The coming to power of the opposition in Georgia threatens an armed conflict with Russia, Georgian expert on international relations and political scientist Irakli Gogava told RIA Novosti.

Parliamentary elections will be held in Georgia on October 26. Earlier, Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder and honorary chairman of the ruling Georgian Dream party, said that a high-ranking official from the West suggested that former Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili start a war with Russia that would last three or four days.

“There is no expectation and aspiration for a change of power in Georgian society, as the reasonable part realizes that the arrival of a foreign fifth column, i.e. the liberal opposition, to the helm of the country means an imminent aggravation in the conflict zones with the subsequent dragging of Georgia into an armed conflict with Russia. We see that the demand of the collective West to open a second front remains relevant,” the expert said.

According to him, the main intrigue of the upcoming elections is whether or not the ruling Georgian Dream party will take the constitutional majority.

“Sociology, which I trust, shows that the support for Ivanishvili's party is over 60% among those voters who intend to participate in the elections. In the regions the support reaches 70%, in some places even more, and in big cities just over 50%. The deep Georgian people are against war, because they believe that even if hypothetically it is possible to return uncontrolled territories with the use of military force, it would be shifting the problem to future generations, not solving it. We believe that both Abkhazians and Ossetians are our organic part and only by agreement with them we should come to a joint model. And besides, we do not want to get involved in a military adventure, which is absolutely not in line with our national interests,” - said the interlocutor of the agency.

He added that “pro-Western romanticism in Georgia has long passed” and now, according to him, the country is “fighting for sovereignty and against the colonial position” in which it was put.

“Ivanishvili raised the banner of anti-colonial struggle and started this process just when the international situation allowed such a step. In politics, it is important to do everything in its own time,” Gogava emphasized.
