An adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader met with the Syrian president and assured him of Tehran's support

An adviser to Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Larijani has met with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in Damascus to convey Iran's message of support for the Syrian government, Mehr reports.

Press TV quoted an informed source as saying that the meeting was held in the Syrian capital Damascus on Friday.

Meanwhile, senior Iranian lawmaker and member of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, Yaqub Rezazadeh, categorically rejected claims that the country's embassy in Syria has been closed and its staff as well as military advisers evacuated from Damascus, stressing that diplomats and commanders are still in the Arab country.

"We have not evacuated our advisers and (the) embassy staff. They are present in Damascus," Rezazadeh said on Saturday.

Earlier on Saturday, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei said the country's diplomatic mission in Damascus was operating normally.

Baghaei explicitly rejected claims that the Iranian embassy in Damascus had been evacuated.
